Jane Austen's Copy of Shakespeare's Sonnets
1 3/4" x 1 1/4"
96 pages
A conceit of my own. A Jane Austen expert told me that Austen was
especially fond of the Sonnets, and suggested making a miniature copy.
I've printed all 154 sonnets, and prefaced it with a quote from
Mansfield Park:
“But Shakespeare one gets
acquainted with without knowing how. It is a part of an Englishman's
constitution. His thoughts and beauties are so spread abroad that one
touches them everywhere; one is intimate with him by instinct. No man
of any brain can open at a good part of one of his plays without
falling into the flow of his meaning immediately.” The
binding is contemporary with Austen,
and Jane's signature appears on the flyleaf.
