"An old family tradition, religiously kept because of the fame of the
House it belonged to, told and retold for many generations, and only
crystallized and written down at last after many centuries: there is in
brief the origin of the Book of Ruth . . . . . whatever the date when
it was actually written, it still preserved, evidently, all its
original charm and oral naturalness and simplicity in taking on a
literary form. And it still keeps for us this freshness, in every
sympathetic detail, every touch of emotion, and moves us, after all
these centuries, like some affecting thing of yesterday - a true tale,
truly and beautifully told."
The Book of Ruth (J. M. Dent, London 1896) was the first book
illustrated by William Brown Macdougall. He Illustrated eight books in
his short career, all of them heavily decorated in the Aubrey
Beardsley/William Morris style. This is a facsimile of a rare
original copy owned by a well-known collector of Art Nouveau
illustration.
The book is bound in antique cream kid leather, with paper labels on
the front, back, and spine that approximate the embossed cloth
cover of the original.
