Napoleon's Retreat and Minard's Map

A Miniature Map Portfolio
2 1/2" x 1 3/4"  (books) and 2 3/4" x 2 1/8" x 3/4" (box)
Limited to twenty copies.

A  boxed set of miniature volumes:  a pamphlet  telling  the history of Napoleon's invasion and subsequent retreat from Russia in 1812, and a portfolio containing Charles Joseph Minard's famous carte figurative  illustrating the disaster.

Napoleon's invasion of Russia began with 450,000 soldiers and returned to France with 10,000. Including the Russian army's losses and civilian deaths, the death toll was more than a million.  Minard's infographic, which has been called the best statistical graphic ever drawn,  tells the gruesome story as well as any words. The dwindling number of soldiers, the vast distances they covered, the approaching winter, are all  illustrated  together in one damning illustration. Never have numbers spoken so eloquently.

The books and the box are bound in textured dark blue paper and lined with a mottled Nepalese Lokta paper.
