Tom O' Bedlam's Song
"From
the hag and hungry goblin, that into rags would rend ye,
And
the spirit that stands by the naked man in the book of moons, defend
thee.
That
from your five sound senses you never be forsaken,
Nor
wander from yourself with Tom, abroad to beg your bacon."
61 numbered pages, 24 illustrations
11/16" x 1 1/8"
The
stark and beautiful English folk song mentioned by Shakespeare in KING
LEAR, illustrated with (mostly) Elizabethan woodcuts that
have
been digitally altered. These lines from the final verse give a
haunting, otherworldly thrill:
"...by
a knight of ghosts and shadows I summoned am to tourney
Ten
leagues beyond the wide world's end: methinks it is no journey."
Bound
in black lizard patterned paper, with a spine of black kid leather with
raised bands, and decorative endpapers. There are paper titles pasted
to the front and back covers.
