Microcosmic Millinery
2 1/16" x 2 1/8"
80 pages, 32 illustrations
A collection of
digital illustrations of hat and headdress designs,
based on the scientific drawings of Ernst Haeckel. His
KUNSTFORMEN DER
NATUR, published in parts beginning in 1899, is a masterpiece of Art
Nouveau design and scientific observation. As inspiration for costume
designers, it's an endless treasure trove. I've taken thirty-two of my
favorite microscopic creatures, and turned them into hats (the Spirobranchia
in particular make great helmets). Each design is faced with
a
small version of its original.
I published a set of drawings on this theme a couple of years ago as a
loose photographic portfolio. The illustrations in this book are
entirely new, except for one that was too good to give up.
The square volume is bound in a shiny black Japanese paper embossed
with red dragonflies, and has endpapers of marbled pink and turquoise.
There is a paper label pasted to the front.
