A magnificent walnut case containing six pull-out drawers. Each drawer
contains a portfolio bound in black and gold Japanese paper
that houses one of a series of six continental maps from the
Atlas
spheroidal et universel de geographie. (Garnier, F. A.,
1803-1863, 1862)
. These maps are noted not only for their beauty, but for being among
the first to depict the continents on a globe, shaded to resemble a
sphere.
Atop the map case sits a glass vitrine containing three globes:
terrestrial, lunar, and celestial. The piece is ornamented with brass
and leather fittings and hinges.
