A Miniature Map Portfolio, 1 1/4" x 1 11/16"

A portfolio, bound in an tan 18th century print, containing four maps from Jonathan Swift's GULLIVER'S TRAVELS. The folded envelope-shaped portfolio is covered with a gold vellum slipband with a label reading " MAPS of Several Remote Nations of the WORLD, By Lemuel Gulliver, First a Surgeon, then a Captain of Several Ships". The portfolio is lined with yellow and white striped paper, and contains a packet of four maps, also covered with a gold vellum slipband. The maps are 1 1/2" x 1", and consist of:

The Kingdoms of Laputa, Balnibarbi, Glubbdrubdrib, Lugnagg, and Japon

Bound in dark blue faille paper with a gold spine and green piping. The interior is lined with faintly embossed green paper, and contains gold crossed bands that hold a map (3 1/2" x 7" unfolded) of the medieval route between Constantinople and Khanbalik.

The very names of the cities shine like gold: Samarkand, Isfahan, Kokand. A transcontinental route from east to west has existed for thousands of years, and silk first arrived in Europe in Roman times. A lovely map of the entire route, bordered with Chinese motifs.

Bound in green embossed lizard paper with insets of papyrus, interior lined with heavy cream paper, and a folder that holds a detachable map, 7 1/2" x 4 1/4" unfolded. Enclosed in a 1" wide vellum slipband (not shown).Paper title pasted on the front. Signed by the artist.

A map of the Nile from Aswan to the Delta,marked with significant cities from the ancient and modern world, and a border of Egyptian lotus. A must-have for a miniature explorer.

From Lewis Carroll's poem, 'The Hunting of the Snark''
Bound in heavy cream paper with a spine of gray and brown marbled paper, the interior lined with the same marbled paper, with vellum pockets. The pocket on the verso holds the pertinent lines from the poem, and the pocket on the recto the Bellman's (blank) map. Paper title pasted on the front.

Bound diagonally in cream paper printed with old star maps, and black kid leather. The interior is lined with pearlized off-white paper, and two diagonal pockets. The pocket on the verso holds the pertinent lines from the novel, and the pocket on the recto the treasure map ( 8 1/2" x 5 1/2" unfolded). Paper title pasted on the spine.
